MTG Reality Fracture Set Guide: Superfriends, Prepared, and Exhaust Explained

Reality Fracture is the in-universe Magic set that closes out 2026's story before the Star Trek crossover, and it's one of the most planeswalker-dense sets Wizards has ever printed. The plane's reality has been shattered, pulling alternate-reality versions of the Multiverse's planeswalkers into a single set. If you've ever wanted a proper superfriends set, this is it. Here's what's known so far.

Release Date

Reality Fracture (set code FRA, with FRC for its Commander decks) releases in paper on October 2, 2026.

The Identity: Planeswalkers, Everywhere

Reality Fracture's defining hook is its sheer density of planeswalkers. It reprints and reimagines a wave of familiar 'walkers as cheap, low-loyalty "compressed" cards you can actually run four or five of in one deck — think Chandra, Torch of Defiance, The Theorist, Jace Beleren, Chandra, Chill of Compliance, Ajani Resolute, Ajani Unrelenting, Garruk, Curse Breaker, and Garruk, Veiled Butcher.

Several of those same characters *also* show up as legendary creatures — their fractured-reality selves — like Liliana the Faultless and Liliana the Repentant. The marquee archetype is superfriends / planeswalker-matters built on top of proliferate.

Returning Mechanic: Prepared

Prepared, first seen in Strixhaven, returns on double-faced "Creature // Spell" cards. A condition makes the creature *prepared*; while it's prepared you may cast a copy of its spell half, which then unprepares it. It's a repeatable, modal body-plus-spell value engine that shines in spellslinger and graveyard decks.

New Keyword: Exhaust

Exhaust is an activated ability you may activate only once, ever — a powerful one-shot effect (for example, Liliana the Repentant's reanimation). Treat exhaust abilities as single-use haymakers, not repeatable engines.

Surveil, mill, flashback, lifegain, and +1/+1 counters round out the recurring support themes across all five colors.

Which Cards Can Be Your Commander?

This is the big one, and it trips people up: the set's many planeswalkers — Chandra, Jace, Ajani, Garruk and the rest — are NOT legal commanders. Only its legendary *creatures* can helm a deck. The early-spoiled commander options are:

• - Liliana the Faultless — mono-white Human Cleric
• - Tinybones, Pocket Nuisance — mono-black Skeleton Rogue
• - Liliana the Repentant — mono-black Human Warlock
• - Titanbones, Towering Heart — mono-green Skeleton Druid

You build superfriends *under* one of these commanders, not with a planeswalker in the command zone.

• - Superfriends fans finally get a deep bench of cheap, stackable planeswalkers and proliferate payoffs
• - Spellslinger and graveyard decks benefit from the returning Prepared mechanic
• - One-shot value from Exhaust rewards decks that can win off a single, decisive activation
