Commander Ban List Update (October 2026): Predictions and What to Expect

Wizards' Banned & Restricted announcement lands October 12, 2026, and Commander has been quiet since February. Here's what could change, how the Game Changers list and bracket system factor in, and what it means for your decks.
Wizards of the Coast's next Banned & Restricted announcement is scheduled for October 12, 2026, and for Commander players it is the most anticipated one in months. The format has been remarkably quiet — the last Commander change landed back on February 9, 2026 — so speculation about what, if anything, moves is running hot. Here's a grounded look at what could change and what it means for your decks.
> Update note: This article is written ahead of the announcement to cover the predictions people are searching for right now. We'll update it with the confirmed results the moment the list drops.
How Commander's ban list works now
Since Wizards took over management of the Commander format, there are two levers that matter:
- - The ban list itself — cards that simply aren't legal in Commander (Channel, Black Lotus's broken friends, the fast-mana and tutor outliers that have accumulated over the years).
- - The Game Changers list — currently 53 cards that aren't banned, but are restricted by the official bracket system. Game Changers are off-limits in Bracket 2, capped at three in Bracket 3, and unrestricted in Brackets 4–5.
That second lever is the one most likely to move. Rather than banning a powerful card outright, Wizards can now add it to the Game Changers list, which nudges it out of casual tables without erasing it from higher-powered ones. See our full breakdown of the bracket system and the Game Changers list for how the tiers work.
What people expect to change
Nothing is confirmed until the announcement, but the community conversation centers on a few themes:
- - Game Changers tweaks over hard bans. With the bracket system still in beta, the smart money is on additions (or a few removals) to the 53-card list rather than new outright bans. Fast mana, powerful free spells, and the most oppressive stax pieces are the usual candidates.
- - A possible unban or two. Quiet periods sometimes precede the loosening of an old ban now that brackets can contain a card's power at the casual level instead of banning it everywhere.
- - Bracket-rule clarifications. The beta has drawn feedback on mass land denial, extra-turn chains, and two-card infinite combos; refinements to how those are described per bracket are plausible.
What it means for your decks
Whatever moves, the practical impact depends on where you play:
- - Casual / Bracket 2–3 tables: a Game Changers addition could quietly bump a deck up a bracket, which matters for rule-zero conversations before a game.
- - High-power / cEDH: hard bans are what you watch — those reshape the top of the format.
- - Precon and upgrade decks: most won't be affected at all, but it's worth a quick check after the list drops.
The fastest way to see where your list sits is to build or re-run it on Tapped Decks — the builder stamps every deck with its bracket and flags any Game Changers inside, so you'll know immediately whether an update changed your deck's tier.
