MTG The Hobbit Set: Every Card Revealed, Release Date, and What to Expect

Magic returns to Middle-earth with The Hobbit on August 14, 2026. Smaug, Bilbo, Thorin, and the One Ring are back — here's the full breakdown.

After the massive success of The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth, Magic: The Gathering is heading back to Middle-earth — this time for The Hobbit. Here's everything revealed at MagicCon Las Vegas.

Release Date

The Hobbit releases August 14, 2026, with prerelease events starting August 7, 2026.

Cards Revealed So Far

Bilbo Baggins (Multiple Versions) Bilbo appears in at least two versions: - **Bilbo, Luckwearer** — Likely a value-oriented card reflecting Bilbo's knack for stumbling into good fortune - **Bilbo, Thief in the Night** — The burglar version, probably with rogue or theft mechanics

Smaug the Magnificent The dragon gets a gilded collector variant that will be one of the set's chase cards, available exclusively in Collector Boosters. Community feedback noted the base version's 4/3 stats feel underpowered for a dragon sitting on a mountain of gold — but the card likely has powerful abilities to compensate.

Thorin, Mountain-king The leader of the Dwarven company gets his own legendary creature card. Expect Dwarf tribal synergies.

Other Revealed Cards - **The One Ring** — Returns as a Box Topper, the iconic artifact from Tales of Middle-earth - **The Arkenstone** — A new legendary artifact - **My Precious** — A card name we didn't know we needed - **Riddles in the Dark** — The iconic Bilbo vs. Gollum scene as a spell - **An Unexpected Party** — The opening scene as a card - **Tom, Bert, and William** — The trolls, likely as a creature - **Wood Elves** — Elven representation from Mirkwood

The Hobbit is going all-in on premium variants:

  • - Dragon Hoard Frames — Special art treatment on rares and mythics depicting Smaug's treasure
  • - Book Cover Cards — Nostalgic storybook-style artwork
  • - Dwarvish Language Cards — Five beloved Magic cards transliterated into Tolkien's Dwarvish script, including Arcane Signet depicting the mark on Bilbo's door
  • - Gilded Headliner Cards — Ultra-premium gleaming gold versions (Smaug)

Products Available

  • - Collector Boosters — Foil and alternate art guaranteed
  • - Scene Boxes — Two options: "Crack the Plates" and "Treasures of Smaug," each with 6 exclusive borderless cards that form a panoramic scene plus an easel for display

No Commander Decks

Notable absence: there are no Commander preconstructed decks for The Hobbit. Instead, Wizards is releasing a new co-op adventure experience. This is a departure from the Tales of Middle-earth release, which had four Commander decks.

Commander Impact

Despite no precons, The Hobbit will add significant cards to Commander: - Dwarf tribal — Thorin and the Dwarven company could finally make Dwarves a viable tribe - Dragon synergies — Smaug joins an already strong Dragon tribal lineup - Artifact value — The Arkenstone and One Ring reprint add to artifact-based strategies - Hobbit/Halfling tribal — Building on the foundation from Tales of Middle-earth
