MTG The Hobbit Set: Release Date, Best Commanders, and Confirmed Cards

Magic returned to Middle-earth with The Hobbit on August 14, 2026 — the first Tolkien set legal in Standard. Smaug, Thranduil, Thorin, Beorn, and the Adventure mechanic. Here's the full breakdown.
After the massive success of The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth, Magic: The Gathering returned to Middle-earth — this time for The Hobbit. It's the second Tolkien set, and notably the first one that's legal in Standard. Now that it's out, here's the full breakdown — and the commanders players are flocking to.
Release Date
The Hobbit released August 14, 2026, following prerelease weekend August 7–13 and an MTG Arena release on August 11. Gift Bundles ship September 4.
The Best Commanders in The Hobbit
The set turned out to be one of the deepest Commander releases in years, with 79 legendary creatures across the main set and the HOC supplement. The most-built commanders so far:
- - Thranduil, the Elvenking — the runaway favorite, powering Elf typal and legendary-elf value
- - Smaug the Magnificent — the serialized Dragon chase card, built as Dragon tribal and treasure/hoard
- - Beorn the Fierce — a beefy skinchanger commander for Gruul beats
- - The Great Goblin — a Goblin typal payoff out of the Misty Mountains
- - Bard, King of Dale — an Azorius draw-and-token doubler that's tipped to stay popular for years

A Single-Story Set — Legal in Standard
Unlike Tales of Middle-earth (which was a supplemental set), The Hobbit is built around one story: Bilbo, the thirteen Dwarves, Smaug, and the journey to the Lonely Mountain. It comes in two products:
- - The main set (code HOB) — legal in Standard and Limited. This is the first Tolkien set you can play in Standard.
- - An Eternal-legal supplement (code HOC) — Commander/Legacy/Vintage-legal cards that extend the story beyond The Hobbit itself.
The Flagship Mechanic: Adventure
The Hobbit's returning marquee mechanic is Adventure — cards you can first cast as a spell, then later play as a creature from exile. It's a perfect thematic fit for a story about a journey, and it gives the set strong value-oriented gameplay in both Limited and Commander.
There's also confirmed Dwarf typal support, plus Collector-exclusive cards printed in Tolkien's Dwarvish language.
Confirmed Cards
- - Thorin, Mountain-king — the leader of the Dwarven company as a legendary creature, anchoring Dwarf strategies
- - Smaug the Magnificent — the dragon appears as a serialized headliner chase card
- - Bilbo — appears in multiple versions across the set
- - The One Ring — the iconic artifact from Tales of Middle-earth returns as a box-topper reprint
- - Sauron, the Dark Lord and Tom Bombadil — extra legends appearing in the Eternal-legal HOC supplement, not the Standard set
Note that individual card stats (power/toughness and mana costs) have been inconsistent across early sources — check the official card images before trusting specific numbers.
Products Available
- - Play Boosters and Collector Boosters
- - Two Scene Boxes — "Crack the Plates" and "Treasures of Smaug," each with exclusive borderless cards that form a panoramic scene
- - Bundles and five Welcome Decks
No Commander Precons This Time
Unlike Tales of Middle-earth, which shipped four Commander decks, The Hobbit has no preconstructed Commander decks. The Commander-relevant cards instead come through boosters and the Eternal HOC supplement.
Commander Impact
Even without precons, The Hobbit adds plenty to Commander:
- - Dwarf typal — Thorin and the Dwarven company give the long-overlooked Dwarf tribe real support
- - Dragon synergies — Smaug joins an already deep Dragon lineup
- - Adventure value — Adventure cards slot neatly into blink, spellslinger, and value decks
- - Big-name legends — Sauron and Tom Bombadil arrive as build-around commanders through the HOC supplement
