Best Commanders in MTG The Hobbit: Thranduil, Smaug, Beorn, and More

The Hobbit is one of the deepest Commander sets in years. Here are the best commanders from the set — Thranduil, Smaug, Beorn, The Great Goblin, and Bard — with a deck direction for each.

The Hobbit released on August 14, 2026, and it's already one of the deepest Commander sets in years — 79 legendary creatures across the main set and the Eternal-legal HOC supplement. Here are the best commanders from The Hobbit, ranked by how players are actually building them, with a deck direction for each.

1. Thranduil, the Elvenking

The runaway most-built commander from the set. Thranduil anchors an Elf typal deck and rewards you for casting legendary elves, tearing through your deck as they enter. Pair him with classic mana-elf value — Priest of Titania, Circle of Dreams Druid, Elvish Archdruid — and he plays as both a tribal payoff and a draw engine.

Build it as: mono-green or Golgari Elf tribal with a token-and-draw backbone.

2. Smaug the Magnificent

The set's serialized Dragon chase card. Smaug leans into a treasure-and-hoard gameplan — the more resources you pile up, the scarier he gets. He slots naturally into Dragon tribal or a dedicated treasure shell.

Build it as: Rakdos or Grixis dragons with heavy treasure generation (Goldspan Dragon, Xorn, Revel in Riches). See our full Smaug Commander deck guide.

3. Beorn the Fierce

A big, resilient skinchanger for Gruul beatdown. Beorn wants you attacking with large creatures and punishing blockers, and he rewards a low-to-the-ground, creature-heavy build.

Build it as: midrange stompy with trample enablers and combat tricks.

4. The Great Goblin

A Goblin typal payoff straight out of the Misty Mountains. If you've wanted a fresh face for the go-wide goblin deck, this is it.

Build it as: mono-red or Rakdos goblins with token doublers and a sacrifice finish.

5. Bard, King of Dale

An Azorius draw-and-token doubler that reviewers expect to stay relevant for years. Doubling triggers is one of the most powerful things a commander can do, and Bard does it in colors that can protect him.

Build it as: Azorius tokens and value with anthem effects and card advantage.

New Mechanic: Adventure

The Hobbit's flagship mechanic is Adventure — cast a card as a spell first, then later play it as a creature from exile. It's a natural fit for blink, spellslinger, and value decks, and it gives many of the set's commanders built-in card advantage. Even outside a dedicated Hobbit deck, strong Adventure cards slot into existing lists as efficient two-for-ones.

Beyond the Main Set

Two headline legends arrive through the Eternal-legal HOC supplement rather than the Standard set:

  • - Sauron, the Dark Lord — a build-around villain commander for a menacing, grindy strategy.
  • - Tom Bombadil — an off-beat, saga-matters commander for players who love a puzzle.
