MTG's Second Half of 2026: The Hobbit, Reality Fracture, and Star Trek

Marvel Super Heroes kicked off Magic's summer, but the back half of 2026 is stacked with three more major releases. Here's every reveal that matters for Commander players.

The Big Three Sets Left in 2026

The Hobbit (August 14, 2026) A return to Middle-earth following the success of Tales of Middle-earth — and the first Tolkien set legal in Standard. The flagship mechanic is **Adventure**, and the set brings Dwarf typal support, Thorin Mountain-king, a serialized Smaug the Magnificent, and a One Ring box-topper reprint. Sauron and Tom Bombadil appear in the Eternal-legal HOC supplement. No Commander precons this time. Collector Boosters include Dwarvish-language cards and panoramic Scene Boxes.

Reality Fracture (October 2, 2026) An in-universe set (code FRA) whose reality has shattered, pulling **alternate-reality versions of the Multiverse's planeswalkers** into one expansion — Magic's most planeswalker-dense set and a true superfriends payoff. Familiar 'walkers return as cheap, low-loyalty "compressed" cards (Chandra, Torch of Defiance; The Theorist, Jace Beleren; Ajani; Garruk), so superfriends and proliferate are the marquee archetypes. The **Prepared** mechanic returns from Strixhaven and the new **Exhaust** keyword debuts (one-time-only activated abilities). Note the planeswalkers themselves aren't legal commanders — only the set's legendary creatures are.

Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek (November 13, 2026) The year's final set, and a full Universes Beyond release with four Commander decks. It spans the Federation, Klingons, and the Borg, and introduces four new mechanics: **Spacecraft & Station**, **Assimilate**, **Federation**, and **Face a Dilemma**. The headline collectible: the first-ever actor-autographed Headliner cards, with William Shatner and Kate Mulgrew confirmed signers.

What This Means for Commander

The second half of 2026 is huge for Commander:

• - August: The Hobbit adds Dwarf typal, Dragon support, and Adventure value
• - October: Reality Fracture goes all-in on superfriends — a flood of cheap planeswalkers, the returning Prepared mechanic, and the new Exhaust keyword
• - November: Star Trek delivers four precons (Picard, Spock, Worf, the Borg Queen) and dozens of new commanders

Looking to 2027

Wizards unveiled the 2027 lineup at MagicCon Amsterdam (July 17–19, 2026): three in-universe sets — Nauctus, the Sunken Realm (Magic's first fully underwater plane, February 5), Kamigawa: Titanbreach (a Kamigawa–Ikoria collision, June 4), and The Return to Zhalfir (October 1) — interspersed with three still-secret Universes Beyond releases.
