Can Planeswalkers Be Your Commander in Reality Fracture? (What's Legal)

Reality Fracture prints more planeswalkers than any set before it, so the obvious question is: can you put one in the command zone? For almost all of them, no. Here's the rule and the exceptions, stated plainly.

The Short Answer

By default, a planeswalker cannot be your commander. The Commander rules only allow a card as your commander if it's a legendary creature, or if the card explicitly says "[this card] can be your commander." Most planeswalkers say no such thing, so they're deck cards only.

That's true of nearly every planeswalker in Reality Fracture — the various Chandra, Ajani, Garruk, Liliana, and Jace planeswalker cards, including The Theorist, Jace Beleren and Jace, Reality Sculptor. You play them in the 99; you cannot start with them in the command zone.

The One Exception: Jace, Multiverse Architect

There is exactly one planeswalker in the set you can helm a deck with: Jace, Multiverse Architect ({1}{W}{U}{B}{R}). Its rules text explicitly reads "Jace, Multiverse Architect can be your commander." That single line is what makes it legal — and it makes Jace the natural captain of a four-color superfriends deck. What About "Planeswalker Deck" Cards?

Some planeswalkers in the set create or grow a Jace token via the Empower keyword. Those are still just cards in your deck — Empower and token planeswalkers have nothing to do with command-zone legality. The token is a permanent you make during the game, not a commander.

Which Legends Can Be Your Commander?

Every legendary creature in Reality Fracture is a legal commander, and the set has plenty:

• - Omnath, Locus of the Void [C], Ghalta the Unstoppable [G], and many more.
