The Commander Ramp Package: Best Mana Rocks and Ramp Spells (2026)

How much ramp a Commander deck needs and which mana rocks and ramp spells to run. A tiered package from Sol Ring and Signets to Cultivate and Three Visits, by colour and budget.

Ramp is the engine of Commander. The format starts at 40 life with a commander that often costs four, five, or six mana, so the decks that get ahead are almost always the ones that got their mana ahead first. Here's how much ramp to run and exactly which pieces belong in your package.

How Much Ramp Should a Commander Deck Run?

Aim for 10–12 ramp sources, and front-load them so most cost one to three mana. The goal is simple: cast your commander a turn early, and keep casting a threat every turn after. A deck that plays a mana rock on turn two is effectively a turn ahead of the table for the rest of the game.

Ramp also acts as partial lands — it's why a deck with a strong ramp package can safely run 36–38 lands instead of 40. Two jobs matter here: acceleration (more mana, faster) and fixing (the right colours). In multicolour decks, prioritise ramp that does both.

Tier 1: Run These Almost Every Time

  • - Sol Ring — the best ramp card in the format. One mana, taps for two, goes in every deck. Non-negotiable.
  • - Arcane Signet — two mana, taps for any of your commander's colours. Perfect fixing and acceleration in one.
  • - Fellwar Stone — two mana and, in a multiplayer game, it almost always taps for a colour you want.
  • - Mind Stone / Wayfarer's Bauble — cheap rocks that replace themselves later, so they never feel dead in the late game.

Tier 2: Colour-Based Ramp

Green is the best ramp colour by a wide margin, and its ramp fixes and ramps onto the battlefield as lands (which dodges artifact removal and board wipes):

  • - Nature's Lore / Three Visits / Farseek — two mana, fetch a (usually untapped) land, and can grab dual-typed lands for fixing.
  • - Cultivate / Kodama's Reach — three mana, grab two lands (one to hand), the gold standard of green ramp.
  • - Rampant Growth / Sakura-Tribe Elder — efficient early plays; the Elder also blocks and is a sacrifice outlet.

Artifact ramp works in any colour:

  • - Talismans and Signets (Talisman of Dominance, Dimir Signet, etc.) — two-mana rocks for two-colour pairs.
  • - Fictional-free staples like Coldsteel Heart, Prismatic Lens, and Wayfarer's Bauble — flexible, cheap fixing.

Tier 3: High-End & Payoff Ramp

  • - Cyclonic-tempo pieces aside, bigger decks want a few three-mana-plus accelerants: Gilded Lotus, Thran Dynamo, and Hedron Archive (which cashes in for cards later).
  • - The Great Henge — in a creature deck this is ramp, card draw, and life all at once; one of the best cards green can cast.
  • - Smothering Tithe / Dockside-style rocks — powerful but firmly in higher brackets; check your table before running fast mana.

Budget Ramp That Punches Above Its Price

You do not need expensive fast mana to have a great ramp package. A near-complete package of Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Fellwar Stone, Mind Stone, the two-mana green fetches, and Cultivate/Kodama's Reach costs only a few dollars total and performs at any table. What to Cut

More ramp is not always better. If your curve tops out at four mana, you don't need Thran Dynamo — you'll flood on mana with nothing to spend it on. Match your ramp to your payoffs: low-curve decks want cheap rocks and can run fewer of them; big-mana decks want more ramp and higher-end pieces. Balance it against your card draw so your extra mana always has a card to spend it on.

Ramp, Handled Automatically

When you build a deck on Tapped Decks, the ramp package is calculated for you — the builder picks the right number of rocks and ramp spells for your commander's colours, curve, and budget, favouring fixing in multicolour decks and keeping fast mana in line with the bracket you target. It slots straight into the wider deck template, so your mana, draw, and removal all stay in balance.
