The Commander Deck Template: How Many Lands, Ramp, Removal & Card Draw (2026)

A proven 100-card Commander deckbuilding template — how many lands, ramp, card draw, removal, and win conditions every EDH deck needs, and how to adjust the ratios for your commander.
The hardest part of building a Commander deck usually isn't finding good cards — it's knowing how many of each kind of card to run. Too few lands and you stall on three mana; too little card draw and you run out of gas by turn six; no removal and the table's best threat simply runs you over. This template gives you a proven 100-card skeleton you can drop almost any commander into, plus how to adjust the ratios for your deck.
The 100-Card Commander Template
Every Commander deck is exactly 100 cards including your commander. Here's a balanced default that works for the large majority of decks:
- - 1 Commander — your deck's centerpiece, and the card that sets your colour identity.
- - 38 Lands — the single most important number in the deck.
- - 10 Ramp — mana rocks and ramp spells that accelerate and fix your mana.
- - 10 Card Draw — repeatable engines and refills so you never run empty-handed.
- - 10 Removal — answers for creatures, artifacts, enchantments, and problem permanents.
- - 3 Board Wipes — mass removal to climb back from a losing board.
- - 5 Protection & Utility — counterspells, protection, recursion, and the odd tutor.
- - ~23 Theme & Win Conditions — the cards that actually make the deck yours.
That adds up to 100. The first six rows are the skeleton — get them right and almost any pile of themed cards becomes a functional deck. The last two rows are where your commander's strategy actually lives.
Lands: 36–38 Is the Default
Land count is the number most new deckbuilders get wrong, almost always by running too few. 38 lands is a safe default for a normal curve. Adjust from there:
- - Low curve (average mana value under 2.5), lots of ramp: drop to 33–35 lands.
- - Big-mana or "battlecruiser" decks (average MV 3.5+): climb to 38–40.
- - Two or more colours: prioritise dual lands and fixing so your lands actually tap for the colours you need, not just the right quantity.
Count your ramp as partial lands: ten mana rocks and ramp spells effectively raise your land count by a few, which is why a ramp-heavy deck can shave a land or two. For the full breakdown of duals, fetches, and colour fixing, see our Commander mana base guide and how to build a mana curve.
Ramp: 10–12 Sources
Ramp is what lets a 40-card-land deck cast its expensive payoffs on time. Aim for 10–12 pieces, front-loaded so most come down on turns one through three — a Sol Ring on turn one or an Arcane Signet on turn two changes the whole game. A full tiered list by colour and budget is in our Commander ramp package guide.
Card Draw: 8–12 Sources
Card advantage is the quiet difference between decks that fizzle and decks that grind out wins. You want 8–12 draw sources, and you want most of them to be repeatable engines — enchantments and creatures that draw every turn — rather than one-shot "draw two" spells. Rhystic Study, Phyrexian Arena, and The Great Henge win games that raw power never could. See the Commander card draw package guide for the best engines in every colour.
Removal: 10 Spot + 3 Board Wipes
Interaction is not optional in a format defined by three opponents. Split it:
- - 8–10 targeted removal spells that hit a range of permanent types. Flexible answers (Swords to Plowshares, Beast Within, Generous Gift, Chaos Warp) are worth more than narrow ones because you can't predict what you'll need to kill.
- - 2–3 board wipes (Wrath of God, Blasphemous Act, Farewell) as a reset button for when a table gets ahead of you.
Our Commander removal package guide covers the ideal mix by colour.
The Rest: Theme, Synergy & Win Conditions
Everything left — roughly a quarter of the deck — is your actual game plan. This is where your tribal payoffs, combo pieces, token engines, or Voltron equipment go, along with 2–4 clear ways to close the game. A deck with a beautiful curve and no finisher just durdles until someone else wins. Decide how you win before you decide what's cute, and read our Commander win conditions guide if you're not sure what your outs are.
Adjusting the Template
The ratios flex with your archetype:
- - Aggro / Voltron: fewer lands (34–36), more cheap protection and haste enablers.
- - Control: more card draw (12+) and interaction, fewer creatures.
- - Combo: more tutors and card selection to assemble your pieces; the win-con slots shrink because your combo *is* the win-con.
- - Ramp / big mana: extra lands and ramp, splashy top-end payoffs.
The template is a starting point, not a straitjacket — but if you're unsure, build to these numbers first and only deviate once you know why.
Let the Template Build Itself
Hitting these ratios by hand is fiddly. When you build on Tapped Decks, the deck builder applies this exact skeleton automatically — it calculates your land count and colour fixing, packs in the right amount of ramp, card draw, and removal for your commander and curve, then fills the rest with on-theme synergy cards and a real win condition. You get a balanced, legal 100 in under a minute, and you can tune any slot from there. For a deeper card-by-card reference, see the staples every Commander deck needs.
