Prepared, Exhaust & Behold Explained: Reality Fracture's Returning Mechanics

Beyond Empower, Reality Fracture uses three more keywords: the returning Prepared and Behold, and the once-ever Exhaust. Here's exactly how each works, the rulings that trip players up, and how to use them in Commander.

Reality Fracture builds its planeswalker theme on the new Empower keyword — explained here — but three more mechanics do a lot of the heavy lifting across the set: the returning Prepared and Behold, and the once-ever Exhaust. Here's how each works and the rulings that matter.

Prepared (returning from Strixhaven)

Prepared appears on double-faced "Creature // Spell" cards. The front is a creature; the back is an instant or sorcery. A condition on the card makes the creature prepared (for example, "at the beginning of your upkeep, if this creature isn't prepared, it becomes prepared," or it "enters prepared"). While it's prepared, you may cast a copy of its spell half — and doing so unprepares it.

The key points:

  • - You cast a copy of the spell; the physical card stays on the battlefield as a creature. It's a body and a repeatable spell.
  • - Once you use it, the creature is unprepared until its condition prepares it again — so it's a recurring, roughly once-per-cycle value engine, not an infinite loop by itself.
  • - Codie, Ravenous Codex copies your prepared spells and can make your whole team prepared — a serious payoff if you go deep on the mechanic.

In practice, Prepared cards are premium in slow, grindy games (and in Limited) because each one is a two-for-one that keeps giving.

Behold (returning keyword action)

Behold a [type] is a casting condition or alternative cost. To "behold" something you either choose a permanent of that type you control *or* reveal a card of that type from your hand. "Behold a Jace" is the common one — and controlling a Jace token (from Empower) or revealing a Jace from hand both satisfy it.

  • - Beholding doesn't sacrifice or tap the permanent — you're just showing you have it.
  • - It usually discounts a spell or unlocks an ability (for example, Countersculpt costs less if you behold a Jace; Theorist's Sanctum enters untapped if you behold a Jace).
  • - It pairs naturally with Empower, since a Jace token is an easy thing to behold.

Exhaust (once-ever activated ability)

Exhaust is an activated ability you may activate only once for as long as that permanent is on the battlefield — effectively once, ever. It's a one-shot haymaker, not an engine.

  • - Example: Liliana the Repentant's Exhaust — "{5}{B}: Return target creature or planeswalker card from your graveyard to the battlefield" — is a single, powerful reanimation you get exactly once.
  • - Because you only get one activation, sequence it for maximum impact: use it on your biggest target or at the moment it swings the game.
  • - If the permanent leaves and returns, it's a new object, so a fresh Exhaust is available — but plan as if you get one shot.

Using Them Together

These mechanics reward patience: Prepared gives you repeatable value bodies, Behold makes your Jace-centric spells cheaper, and Exhaust delivers a decisive one-time payoff. Layer them over the Empower engine and you have a grindy, value-dense deck that pulls ahead over a long game — exactly what Commander rewards.
