Commander Deck Archetypes Explained: Aggro, Control, Combo, and More
Understand the main deck archetypes in Commander and find the one that matches your playstyle.
Every Commander deck falls into one or more archetypes. Understanding these helps you build more focused, effective decks.
Aggro **Goal:** Deal damage fast. Kill opponents before they set up. **How it works:** Cheap creatures, combat tricks, haste enablers, pump effects. **Strengths:** Punishes slow starts, simple gameplan **Weaknesses:** Runs out of cards, vulnerable to board wipes **Commanders:** Krenko, Mob Boss; Jetmir, Nexus of Revels; Najeela, the Blade-Blossom
Control **Goal:** Prevent opponents from executing their plans. Win in the late game. **How it works:** Counterspells, removal, board wipes, card advantage. **Strengths:** Answers to everything, dominant late game **Weaknesses:** Slow, draws hate from multiple opponents **Commanders:** Grand Arbiter Augustin IV; Talrand, Sky Summoner; Tasigur, the Golden Fang
Combo **Goal:** Assemble a combination of cards that wins the game immediately. **How it works:** Tutors, card draw, protection for combo pieces. **Strengths:** Can win from any board state, ignores combat **Weaknesses:** Fragile to interaction, can be boring for opponents **Commanders:** Thrasios & Tymna; Kess, Dissident Mage; Mizzix of the Izmagnus
Midrange **Goal:** Play efficient threats and grind out value over time. **How it works:** Good creatures, removal, card advantage, flexible answers. **Strengths:** Adaptable, good against most strategies **Weaknesses:** Master of none, can be outpaced or out-controlled **Commanders:** Muldrotha, the Gravetide; Korvold, Fae-Cursed King; Yarok, the Desecrated
Voltron **Goal:** Make your commander huge and kill with commander damage (21). **How it works:** Equipment, auras, protection spells, evasion. **Strengths:** Only needs 21 damage per player, commander is always available **Weaknesses:** Commander removal sets you back, single target **Commanders:** Uril, the Miststalker; Wyleth, Soul of Steel; Rafiq of the Many
Aristocrats (Sacrifice) **Goal:** Sacrifice creatures for value. Drain opponents' life totals. **How it works:** Sacrifice outlets, death triggers, token generators, recursion. **Strengths:** Hard to interact with, kills all opponents simultaneously **Weaknesses:** Needs multiple pieces, graveyard hate shuts it down **Commanders:** Teysa Karlov; Korvold, Fae-Cursed King; Meren of Clan Nel Toth
Stax / Tax **Goal:** Slow the game down. Make everything cost more or do less. **How it works:** Tax effects, static abilities that limit opponents, resource denial. **Strengths:** Shuts down faster decks, controls the pace **Weaknesses:** Makes you a target, can make games unfun **Commanders:** Grand Arbiter Augustin IV; Derevi, Empyrial Tactician
