cEDH vs Casual Commander: Understanding the Power Level Spectrum

What separates a cEDH deck from a casual one? Understanding power levels helps you find the right games.

Commander exists on a spectrum from "jank pile of cards I own" to "turn-2 combo kill with Force of Will backup." Understanding where your deck falls helps you find good games.

The Power Level Scale

1-2: Jank / Starter Decks built from whatever cards you have. No mana base optimization, no tutors, mostly cards from a limited collection. Fun for kitchen table.

3-4: Casual / Precon Level Official precons, or decks built with a theme but not optimized. Basic mana base, minimal interaction, straightforward strategies.

5-6: Focused A clear strategy with good cards supporting it. Upgraded precons, or intentionally built decks with a moderate budget. Most casual playgroups live here.

7-8: Optimized Tuned decks with efficient cards, good mana bases, and strong synergies. Multiple win conditions, consistent performance. This is where "casual-competitive" lives.

9-10: cEDH (Competitive EDH) The strongest possible decks with no budget restrictions. Fast mana (Mana Crypt, Mox Diamond), efficient tutors, compact combo wins, and heavy interaction. Games often end turns 3-5.

How to Assess Your Deck

Ask these questions: 1. How fast can you win? Turn 3-4 = high power. Turn 8-10 = mid. Turn 12+ = casual. 2. How many tutors? 5+ tutors = high power. 0-2 = casual. 3. How much fast mana? Mana Crypt, Mox Diamond, Chrome Mox = cEDH territory. 4. How much interaction? 15+ counterspells/removal = high power. 5. What's your budget? $500+ mana base = likely 7+.

The Conversation

Before every game, briefly discuss power levels. "I'm playing a focused Syr Konrad deck, probably a 6." This prevents feel-bad games where one player stomps everyone or gets stomped.

Tapped Decks and Power Level

Our AI builder lets you set a budget, which naturally constrains power level. A $50 deck won't hit cEDH territory. A $200 deck with optimized picks will land around 7-8. The playstyle and commander choice handle the rest.
