Building Around the Infinity Stones: MTG Marvel Commander Deck Ideas
The Infinity Stones are coming to Magic. Here's how to build Commander decks that harness Mind, Soul, Power, Time, Space, and Reality.
The Mind Stone reveal from Marvel Super Heroes shows Wizards is going big with the Infinity Stones cycle. Here's what we know and how to start planning your Commander builds.
The Mind Stone (Confirmed)
The first revealed Infinity Stone is a 2-mana Legendary Indestructible Artifact: - Taps for one white mana - Harness ability (6 mana): At each of your end steps, exile one nonland permanent you control, then return it to the battlefield
This is a flickering engine on an indestructible mana rock. In Commander, this is incredible: - Resets planeswalkers (they come back with full loyalty) - Retriggers ETB creatures every turn (Mulldrifter, Ravenous Chupacabra, Acidic Slime) - Dodges removal by flickering your best permanent - Combos with anything that cares about permanents entering the battlefield
Predicting the Other Stones
Based on Marvel lore and MTG design patterns, here's what the cycle might look like:
Soul Stone (Likely Black) Could interact with creatures dying or returning from graveyards. Reanimation on an artifact would be powerful.
Power Stone (Likely Red) Extra damage, extra combat steps, or stat boosts. Probably the most aggressive stone.
Time Stone (Likely Blue) Extra turns, time manipulation, or taking additional phases. Blue gets the temporal magic.
Space Stone (Likely Green or Colorless) Teleportation effects — flash, blinking lands, or searching for permanents. Could enable ramp.
Reality Stone (Likely Red or Colorless) Reality-warping effects — polymorph, chaos, or transforming permanents into other things.
Five-Color Infinity Stones Commander
If each stone is a different color, a five-color commander that cares about artifacts becomes the obvious shell. Potential commanders: - Thanos (if printed as 5-color) — The flavor home run - Jodah, the Unifier — Legendary matters, supports multicolor - Ramos, Dragon Engine — Gains counters from multicolor spells, generates 5-color mana
The deck would run all six Infinity Stones, artifact tutors (Fabricate, Whir of Invention, Enlightened Tutor), and payoffs for having multiple legendary artifacts.
Flicker Strategies with Mind Stone
Even without the full cycle, Mind Stone alone slots into: - Brago, King Eternal — Blinks permanents on combat damage, Mind Stone adds end-step blinks too - Aminatou, the Fateshifter — Esper blink commander, Mind Stone is perfect - Yarok, the Desecrated — Double ETB triggers means double value from Mind Stone's flicker - Roon of the Hidden Realm — Bant blink staple
