MTG Card Storage and Organization: Protect Your Collection

Your Magic collection is an investment. Proper storage protects card value and makes deck building easier.

Sleeves

Inner sleeves (penny sleeves or perfect fits): The first layer of protection. Keeps dust and moisture off the card surface.

Outer sleeves (Dragon Shield, Ultra Pro, KMC): The main protection layer. Choose matte or glossy backs based on preference. Matte shuffles better.

Double-sleeving: Inner sleeve + outer sleeve. The gold standard for valuable cards and competitive decks. Prevents liquid damage and edge wear.

Storage for Decks

• - Deck boxes: Boulder, Satin Tower, or similar hard cases. Each holds one sleeved 100-card Commander deck.
• - Playmat + deck box combos: Convenient for transport.
• - Magnetic flip boxes: Easy access, secure closure.

Storage for Collections

Under 1,000 cards A simple 800-count card box works. Sort by color, then alphabetically or by set.

1,000-10,000 cards BCW long boxes (3,200 or 5,000 count). Use divider cards to separate by set or color.

10,000+ cards Shelving with multiple BCW boxes. Label everything. Consider a spreadsheet or app to track what you have.

Binders

Use binders for your most valuable cards and trade stock. Side-loading pages (Ultra Pro Platinum) prevent cards from sliding out. Never use top-loading pages — cards fall out when the binder tips.

Climate Control

• - Temperature: Room temperature (65-75°F). Avoid attics, garages, and basements.
• - Humidity: 40-50% relative humidity. Too dry = curling. Too wet = warping and mold.
• - Light: Store away from direct sunlight. UV fades card fronts over time.
