Magic: The Gathering for Beginners — How to Start Playing in 2026

Never played Magic before? Here's everything you need to know to start playing in 2026 — rules, formats, where to play, and how to build your first deck.

Magic: The Gathering is a 30-year-old card game that's bigger than ever. Here's how to jump in without feeling lost.

What Is Magic?

Two or more players cast spells, summon creatures, and try to reduce opponents' life total to zero. Each player builds a deck of cards beforehand, choosing from over 27,000 unique cards printed since 1993.

Core Concepts

Card Types - **Creatures** — attack and block. Your main damage source. - **Instants** — one-time effects you can cast anytime. - **Sorceries** — one-time effects, only on your turn. - **Enchantments** — persistent effects that stay on the battlefield. - **Artifacts** — colorless permanents with various effects. - **Lands** — produce mana (the resource you use to cast spells). - **Planeswalkers** — powerful allies with multiple abilities.

Mana and Colors Five colors of mana, each with a personality: - **White:** Order, protection, small creatures - **Blue:** Knowledge, control, card draw - **Black:** Power, sacrifice, death - **Red:** Chaos, speed, damage - **Green:** Nature, growth, big creatures

Turn Structure 1. Untap your cards 2. Draw a card 3. Play a land (one per turn) 4. Cast spells, attack with creatures 5. End your turn

Which Format to Play

Commander (Recommended for Beginners) 100-card decks, multiplayer, casual. The most popular format and the most social. Start here.

Standard 60-card decks, 1v1, rotating card pool. Good for competitive players, but cards rotate out regularly (costs money to keep up).

Draft/Sealed Open packs and build a deck on the spot. Great for learning, no collection needed.
