MTG Proxy Cards: What They Are, How to Use Them, and Where to Get Them

Everything you need to know about Magic: The Gathering proxy cards — legality, use cases, quality, and how to order them.

Proxy cards are one of the most debated topics in Magic: The Gathering. Here's an honest, straightforward guide to what they are and how to use them responsibly.

What Are Proxy Cards?

A proxy is a stand-in for a real Magic card. It could be a professionally printed replica, a card with a name written on it in Sharpie, or a printed slip inside a card sleeve. The point is to represent a card you don't own for the purpose of playtesting or casual play.

Are Proxies Legal?

  • - Tournament play: No. Proxies are not legal in any sanctioned event (FNM, Grand Prix, Pro Tour, etc.)
  • - Casual play: Up to your playgroup. Most casual groups allow proxies, especially for expensive cards
  • - Commander/EDH: The format is casual by nature. Most groups are fine with proxies, especially at lower power levels. Always ask your group first.

Why Use Proxies?

Playtesting Test a $50 card before buying it. If it doesn't work in your deck, you've saved money.

Budget accessibility Not everyone can afford a $200 mana base. Proxies let you play the game as designed without a financial barrier.

Protecting expensive cards Own a $500 Gaea's Cradle? Play a proxy in your deck and keep the real one safe in a binder.

Trying before buying Build a complete deck with proxies, play 10 games, and only buy the cards you actually want to keep.

Proxy Quality

Modern proxy printing is high quality — full color, correct card frames, proper sizing. They're designed to look and feel close to real cards in a sleeve. They are NOT counterfeits because they don't pretend to be real — they're clearly marked as proxies.

How to Order Proxies

On Tapped Decks, you can order proxy copies of any deck: 1. Build or import a decklist 2. Go to Proxy Decks > Import Decklist 3. Paste your card list and parse it 4. Submit your order at $0.15 per card 5. Receive printed proxies in 3-5 business days

A full 100-card Commander deck costs just $15 in proxy form.

The Right Approach

Be transparent with your playgroup. Ask before showing up with proxies. Most players are happy to play against proxied decks, especially in casual Commander. The goal is for everyone to have fun.
